Ten Ways to Make Your Poetry Stand Out in a Crowd
Slam Poetry
- YouTube "Slam Poetry" and watch a few examples of slam poetry performances.
- Write a slam poem in at least 25-30 lines asking yourself a question and using each line trying to answer the question. Focus on repetition and the use of voice and gestures.
Allegorical Poetry
- An allegory is the representation of abstract ideas or principles by characters, figures, or events in narrative, dramatic, or pictorial form. It is also a form of an extended metaphor.
- Read "Obedience, or The Lying Tale" by Jennifer Chang.
- Write a THREE, four-line Stanza free style poem focusing on Allegories (extended metaphors). Choose three random subjects (animals, people, things, places, etc.) and compare something about Christmas to them. This is the basis of your poem. Come see me for some Apples to Apples cards if you cannot decide on what subjects to write about.
Pantoum

- Assignment: Write an original pantoum focusing on repeating lines.
Shakespearean Sonnets
- How to Write a Shakespearean Sonnet
- Choose a random object and write a sonnet asking a question pertaining to the object chosen.
- Follow all Shakespearean Sonnet requirements including: 14 lines, 3 quatrains, 1 rhyming couplet, ABAB CDCD EFEF GG rhyme scheme, and 9-11 syllables per line.
Past Styles:
Cinquain
- A cinquain is a short, usually unrhymed poem consisting of twenty-two syllables distributed as 2, 4, 6, 8, 2, in five lines.
- Read some Crapsey cinquains to get an idea about how to write them.
- Assignment: Write a cinquain based on a two-syllable word from the dictionary that you have never heard of before.

- The only requirements are two verses (8-16 lines) and one catchy chorus (4-8 lines).

Terza Rima Sonnet is a poem with an eleven syllable count in each line and a rhyming scheme of aba, bcb, cdc, ded, ee (14 lines).

"Pop" Poetry... Poetry as Art
- Read "We Real Cool" by Gwendolyn Brooks
- Write a poem using Microsoft Word, Photoshop or Paint It! The poem must only contain 24 words, 8 periods, two rhymes, and a three-word title. Your finished poem should be considered a work of art when finished.
Free Verse
- "The Moon was but a Chin of Gold" by Emily Dickinson.
- Using it as a reference, write a FIVE, four-line stanza Free Style poem including long pauses ( ----), capitalized important words, and exclamation points where you want the reader to be enthusiastic.
- The first line and title should be the last text message that you have received, even if it's "hey what's up?" or "lol."
Limerick
A Limerick is a rhymed humorous or nonsense poem of five lines which originated in Limerick, Ireland. The Limerick has a set rhyme scheme of : a-a-b-b-a with a syllable structure of: 9-9-6-6-9.

Tyburn
- A tyburn is a six line poem consisting of 2, 2, 2, 2, 9, 9 syllables.
- The first four lines rhyme and are all descriptive words. The last two lines rhyme and incorporate the first, second, third, and fourth lines as the 5th through 8th syllables.
- Using these examples as references, write a Tyburn.
Quoth the Raven, Nevermore.
- Read "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe
- Focus on his use of internal rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeia and refrain.
- Write an eight, six-line stanza (48 lines) poem about a single noun that you're afraid of or creeps you out. This can be symbolic (The Car = car crash) or obvious (The Clown). The title of your poem should be "The ________" just like "The Raven."
- Your poem should include an internal rhyme in each stanza (8 total), 3 examples of alliteration throughout the entire poem, 2 examples of onomatopoeia and a refrain at the end of each stanza, just like "The Raven."
Minute Poetry
- Read "Sapphire Display"
- The Minute Poem is a rhyming verse form consisting of 12 lines of 60 syllables written in strict iambic meter. The poem is formatted into 3 stanzas of 8,4,4,4; 8,4,4,4; 8,4,4,4 syllables. The rhyme scheme is: aabb, ccdd, eeff
- Write a minute poem focusing strictly on the requirements noted above.

- Write a 20-30 line Ode to a random object or favorite food using heavy sensory details.

Epitaph
An epitaph is a brief poem inscribed on a tombstone praising a deceased person, usually with rhyming lines.

It can be an epitaph as a tribute for someone you know who has passed away, for a celebrity/entertainer who has passed away, or for a made-up character that you come up with. Take a picture of the tombstone and post it on your blog, then give it to me so I can decorate our Poetry wall for Halloween!

Villanelle
- A Villanelle is a nineteen-line poem consisting of a very specific rhyming scheme: aba aba aba aba aba abaa. The first and the third lines in the first stanza are repeated in alternating order throughout the poem, and appear together in the last couplet (last two lines).

- Write and post an original villanelle about anything you want focusing on the rhyme scheme and structure
ABCs!
- An ABC poem has a series of lines that create a mood, picture, or feeling. Lines are made up of words and phrases. The first word of line 1 begins with an A, the first word of line 2 begins with a B etc.
- Assignment: Write an ABC poem using all letters of the alphabet focusing on a mood, picture or feeling.
Robert Frost
- Google Robert Frost Poetry and read any of his poems online.
- Based on his style and using one of his poems as a reference, write a four line, three stanza free verse poem about YOUR high school experience.
- Be extremely detailed focusing heavily on sensory details.
"Americana" Pentameter
- Read "Ex-Basketball Player" by John Updike
- Notice how Updike writes in iambic pentameter, yet is considered an American poet.
- Updike is famous for writing about blue-collar Americans' past successes contrasted with their "normal" present.
- Write a six line, four stanza poem in pentameter (10 syllables/line) on a recent, actual obituary of someone you never knew.
- Choose one obituary by clicking on this LINK and base your poem off of that person "exaggerating" the actual bio.
Monorhyme
- Read "Late for Class"
- A Monorhyme is a poem in which all the lines have the same end rhyme.
- Write a 10 line poem in which all the lines have the same end rhyme. NO REPEATS
Palindrome (Mirrored Poetry)

- A palindrome, by definition, is a word, phrase, verse, sentence, or even poem that reads the same forward or backward. It stems from the Greek word palindromos: palin, meaning again, and dromos, meaning a running. Combining the two together, the Greek meaning gives us, running back again...

Poetry with Mr. C will be asynchronous. Asynchronous learning is a student-centered teaching method that uses online learning resources to facilitate information sharing outside the constraints of time and place among a network of people. In a nutshell, students will read and write poetry "at-your-own-pace"with due dates spread out throughout the semester. It is the student's job to further explore the style using the internet, books, and his/her original weebly poetry blog.
