Assignment:
- YouTube "Slam Poetry" and watch a few examples of slam poetry performances.
- Write a slam poetry in as many lines as possible asking yourself a question and using each line trying to answer the question. Focus on repetition and the use of voice and gestures.

Assignment:
- See Mr. Curcio for a slip of paper which includes the first line to a famous poem
- Re-write the poem using the correct number of lines also provided on the slip of paper
- Compare your written poem to the actual poem by typing the first line into Google or Yahoo!

- Listen to the four songs provided that ask a question in their title.
- Write a six line poem for each song answering the question proposed

Assignment:
- Read "Chicago" by Carl Sandburg
- Write a poem about your hometown or city/area that you attach yourself to using the following structure:
- 5 line intro

5/12 Updike: My Idol
Assignment:
- Read "Ex-Basketball Player" by John Updike
- Write a 3 stanza, six-line poem in iambic pentameter about your role model/idol, a Derry/Latrobe legend (Bicycle Bob, Hermie, Mister Rogers, etc.), your Favorite Teacher, or a random obituary (true test of creativity!).

Assignment:
- Read "Mowing" by Robert Frost
- Sit outside and notice everything around you in nature ie. the wind, trees, leaves, animals, sun, birds, sounds, etc.
- Write a 20-line poem beginning with one object or sound and then use your surroundings to mold your poem line by line

- Watch some odes on YouTube by searching the term "ode"
- Write a 20-30 line Ode to a random object or favorite food using heavy sensory details.

- Read "The Summer I was Sixteen" by local Latrobe poet Geraldine Connolly.
- Using it as a reference, write a FOUR or FIVE, 4 line stanza poem about a memory from your sophomore year (Summer 2010 - May 2011) focusing on Voice and Narration.

5/5 Emily Dickinson: Free Verse
Assignment:
- Read "The Moon was but a Chin of Gold" by Emily Dickinson.
- Using it as a reference, write a FIVE, four-line stanza Free Style poem including long pauses ( ----), capitalizing important words, and including exclamation points where you want the reader to be enthusiastic. The first line and title should be the last text message that you have received, even if it's "hey what's up?" or "lol."
5/4 Jennifer Chang: Allegorical Poetry
Assignment:
- Read "Obedience, or The Lying Tale" by Jennifer Chang.
- Using it as a reference and in honor of Mother's Day on Sunday, write a THREE, four-line Stanza free style poem focusing on Allegories (extended metaphors). Choose three random subjects (animals, people, things, places, etc.) and compare something about your mother to them. This is the basis of your poem.

Assignment:
- Read "since feeling is first" by e.e. Cummings
- Write a 20 line Avant Garde style poem about any subject focusing on Punctuation, Capitalization, Word choice and word placement.

- a vehicle
